Guru Amar Das Ji
3rd Guru

Guru Amar Das Ji

(1479 - 1574)

Path to Guruship

Guru Amar Das Ji became the third Guru at the age of 73. He showed that it is never too late to dedicate oneself to God and seva (selfless service).

Pangat and Sangat (Langar)

He strengthened the institution of Langar (free community kitchen). He made a rule that anyone who wanted to meet him must first sit on the floor and eat Langar with everyone else, regardless of their caste, wealth, or status.

Women's Equality

He was a great champion of women's rights. He strictly forbade the practice of Sati (widow burning), encouraged widow remarriage, and appointed women to lead Sikh congregations (Manjis).
