Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji

(1595 - 1644)

Miri and Piri

After the martyrdom of his father, Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji wore two swords: Miri (representing worldly or political authority) and Piri (representing spiritual authority). He taught that a Sikh must be a saint as well as a soldier.

The Akal Takht

He built the Akal Takht (The Throne of the Timeless One) right across from Harmandir Sahib. It became the center for justice, political discussion, and military planning for the Sikh community.

Bandi Chhor Divas

He was imprisoned by the Mughal Emperor in Gwalior Fort. When he was offered release, he refused to leave unless 52 Hindu kings imprisoned with him were also freed. Sikhs celebrate this day as Bandi Chhor Divas (Day of Liberation).
