Guru Ram Das Ji

(1534 - 1581)

Founding of Amritsar

Guru Ram Das Ji founded the holy city of Amritsar, originally called Ramdaspur. He also had the holy pool (Sarovar) dug, which later became the site of Harmandir Sahib (the Golden Temple).

The Lavan

He composed the 'Lavan,' a beautiful four-stanza hymn that is sung during the Anand Karaj (Sikh marriage ceremony). It describes the spiritual journey of the soul uniting with God, which is mirrored in the union of marriage.

Growth of the Community

He encouraged Sikhs to be hard-working and honest in their businesses. He established the Masand system to connect the growing Sikh community and collect offerings to support the Langar and city-building.
